Waitematā has become the first of Auckland’s local boards to develop its own action plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Waitematā Local Board’s Low Carbon Action Plan is aimed at helping individuals, families, community groups and businesses transform Auckland into an energy-resilient, low-carbon city, and was finalised recently by the local board, community groups and stakeholders. It is based on active interventions and designed to work in conjunction with the council’s Low Carbon Auckland: Auckland’s energy resilience and low carbon action plan.
“We’ve been thinking creatively about how to build hope and determination within communities and businesses so we can work collectively against climate change,” says Deborah Yates, who heads the local board’s natural environment portfolio.
Local board member Rob Thomas, who also holds the natural environment portfolio, says communities in Waitematā have a strong level of environmental awareness. “There’s a shared understanding of how precious the environment is. Now more than ever, it’s critical we act to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and this plan is a step towards that future.”
