Members of the Kelston community, Housing New Zealand staff, Whau Local Board members and the Minister for Pacific Peoples, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, gathered recently for the opening of Tamatimu Lane, part of a new Housing New Zealand development.
The lane, which is home to five new Housing New Zealand homes, is part of a redevelopment project that has allowed Housing New Zealand to make better use of its land with 11 new homes built to meet local demand.
Kelston Boys High School Principal Brian Evans recommended to Housing New Zealand they name the lane after past pupils, Citizen and Wellington Tamatimu, to recognise and acknowledge their outstanding academic achievements.
The name ‘Tamatimu Lane’ was then approved by Whau Local Board. Citizen and Wellington were both outstanding scholars while at Kelston Boys High School and graduated from Auckland University with conjunct law and commerce degrees. The twins lived in the local community, and were raised in a Housing New Zealand rental home.
