Auckland Council’s three animal shelters pulled out all the stops, bringing out a park full of dogs and a petting pen full of puppies to take Auckland office workers “walkies” at lunchtime on Friday 13 November 2015.
Hundreds of central city workers took advantage of the early summer sun in Victoria Park, watching agility and tug-toy making demonstrations as they queued to go for a walk with dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds and ages.
“We had plenty of shelter dogs there, wagging, willing and waiting for their forever homes. I’m delighted to say more than 500 people signed up to walk a dog and our shelters received 120 requests for information about adoptions,” said Councillor Cathy Casey, responsible dog owner and Chair of Auckland’s Community Development and Safety Committee.
The council’s animal shelters find forever homes for hundreds of unwanted or abandoned dogs each year. Each is released after completing temperament testing, vet check, vaccinations, de-sexing, registration and micro-chipping.
“Our adoption programme is already very successful, but we want to make sure that Aucklanders wanting a dog think of us first, so that every adoptable dog finds its forever home and family,” said Animal Management Manager, Tracey Moore.
