It was the perfect sunny day to release six pāteke (brown teal) on Rotoroa Island in this week’s Zoo Tales episode. Watch them take to their new wetland homes like ducks to water!
Pāteke were listed as nationally endangered until 2008, when its conservation status was changed to ‘recovering’ due to an increase in numbers.
Auckland Zoo breeds animals such as pāteke, kiwi, tuatara, whio (blue duck), weta punga, and the North Island kaka for release into the wild. However, these particular pāteke are from The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust.
Council-controlled organisation Regional Facilities Auckland manages major regional facilities and iconic venues across Auckland, including Auckland Zoo.
