New and upgraded underpasses on the Northwestern Cycleway feature art inspired by the natural heritage and resources of the area.

The NZ Transport Agency asked Te Kawerau a Maki iwi designer Reuben Kirkwood to look at ways of giving the underpasses visual appeal from a cultural perspective.

Daniel Tippett and Darryl Thompson, both renowned graffiti artists, were commissioned to produce work that would highlight a Māori aspect as well as brighten the area.
