Spotlight on our local board neighbourhoods 1

Great people, parks and open spaces are in abundance in the Manurewa Local Board area.

Not only is it home to the stunning Auckland Botanic Gardens but also Totara Park with its adventure playground, swimming pool, mountain bike tracks and horse riding trails. There’s the coastline too, with the Weymouth Walkway, a great place for an afternoon outing.

“Many people who call Manurewa home have lived here a long time. It’s really a special place with character and natural beauty,” says Manurewa Local Board Chair Angela Dalton.

“Manurewa has one of the highest proportions of residents aged under-25, so providing great spaces for youth to stay active and healthy is a priority for our local board.”

Over the last few years, the local board has completed an upgrade of the Manurewa Aquatic Centre, the Netball Manurewa Community Events Centre, as well as a multi-purpose sports complex at Mountfort Park. A new skate park at Randwick Park will soon be accompanied by a community-led pavilion project.

Manurewa includes: the Wiri industrial estate, Manurewa East, Clendon, Homai, Randwick Park, Southmall, and the coastal suburbs of Weymouth and Wattle Downs.

Manurewa’s population: 82,242 or 6 per cent of Aucklanders (2013 census).

Did you know?

Manurewa holds the Guiness World Record for the ‘Longest Ice Cream Dessert’. Earlier this year the community raced against the heat to create a 600 metre-long ice cream dessert made up of 2000 litres of ice cream, 600 metres of guttering, 255 tables and a range of sundae toppings.
