The sun has finally come out, so where better to spend the weekend than at the beach. We’ve picked out some of our favourite spots to visit while the weather is warm.
Waiake Bay, Torbay
With stunning views of Rangitoto and the sun setting, Waiake is a favourite with walkers, joggers and photographers. A grassy reserve leads down to the sandy beach, offering families options to kick a ball around, throw a Frisbee, tan on the beach or take a dip.
Karioitahi Beach, Franklin
A wee bit of a drive away, the trip to Karioitahi Beach will be worth it. A common feature here are locals who walk their horses along the beach. Permits are available for those wanting to drive on Karioitahi, and can be applied for on the council website.
Karaka Bay, Glendowie
Karaka Bay has amazing views of the harbour, and is the perfect spot for a picnic with friends. It’s also quite sheltered from the harbour’s swells, so can be ideal for a more gentle swim.
Piha Beach, Waitākere
An ever-popular favourite with visitors to New Zealand, Piha Beach is the jewel in the West Auckland crown of wild west coast beaches. The sand is black-hot while the beach falls within a valley of cliff faces and mountains. Lion Rock is an iconic west Auckland landmark to explore and once you’re done you can grab a bite at the delicious eateries a few metres back from the beach.
Pt Chevalier Beach, Pt Chevalier
This near 1km-long beach sits at the bottom of a tree-filled reserve, where you can fly a kite, walk the dog or take a seat and enjoy the views.
