Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board has voiced its support for plans to redevelop Onehunga’s port and town centre.
Local board investment in Onehunga has helped create a new focus on unlocking the area’s long-term potential. Recent projects to benefit from local board funding include the new $30 million Onehunga foreshore and a $1.68 million upgrade to Onehunga Mall.
Panuku Development Auckland has earmarked Onehunga for a boost to the quality of urban living. Using land it owns in the area, Panuku will enable developers to build high-quality, mixed styles of housing close to the town centre, public transport and the water’s edge.
Meeting locals' needs
Local board chair Simon Randall says Onehunga’s redevelopment is closely aligned with the board’s objectives for town centres, transport solutions, businesses and built environments – all designed to meet local needs.
As well as the 4ha of council-owned sites in Onehunga town centre, Panuku is negotiating with Ports of Auckland to buy the 4ha Onehunga Port site.
Panuku considers Onehunga’s location on the edge of the Manukau Harbour, 10km from both Auckland city centre and Auckland Airport, as an ideal location for development. Making the port more available for public use will unlock economic, recreation, tourism and transportation benefits.
