Auckland Council will provide a refund of $22.77 to 230,000 households that will not receive its inorganic collection service within the current 2015/2016 financial year (ending 30 June 2016).
The new service, which replaces kerb-side collection, will be available across the Auckland region during 2016.
Commenting on the refund, Chief Operating Officer Dean Kimpton says: “Ratepayers were charged $22.77 this financial year to cover the cost of this new service, as part of the Waste Management Targeted Rate.
“Given that some collection dates don’t begin until after 1 July 2016 with the start of the 2016/2017 financial year, we felt that on balance it was fair to refund those households that won’t receive the service in the earlier part of the year.
“This new service is a big step forward in our programme to cut back on the amount of waste Auckland creates, and expands access to inorganic collections to almost all parts of the region.”
The refund will be credited through fourth quarter rates notices, after the Finance and Performance Committee formalises the remission at its meeting on Thursday 25 February.
