Walking and cycling along the southern end of Orewa Beach will soon be safer and more enjoyable.
The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has allocated $520,000 to a project which will create a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists by widening the existing path at the beach’s southern end.
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Chairperson, Julia Parfitt, says that building a shared path will allow locals and visitors easier access to the beach’s southern area between Orewa Bridge and Orewa Reserve car park.
“The existing track is very popular and has lovely views of the estuary and beach. But the narrow path, which also passes the holiday park, is not wide enough for both pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely and comfortably. The uneven path also makes it difficult for older people and those with strollers and wheelchairs.
“This project fits well with our continuous focus on providing walking and cycling options that encourage our community to be more active,” she says.
The shared path, constructed from concrete, will follow the route of the existing path and will be at least 3 metres wide throughout.
Construction starts on 18 April and should take approximately 11 weeks with an expected end date of 30 June depending on the weather. People will still be able to use the path as work is being done stages with each section opening after it’s complete.
