"I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading, how much sooner one tires than anything of a book.”
Despite being nearly two centuries after her death, Jane Austen’s legacy continues to live on – including right here in Auckland.
Howick Library has captured her legacy by creating a Jane Austen book club.
“The purpose of the club is to provide a forum for a group of like-minded individuals, who enjoy reading and discussing her novels. Reading the novels will allow readers to immerse themselves in the world of Austen – they may never want to resurface,” says Georgina Boalch, Howick Library Assistant and long-time Austen fan.
Austen’s work continues to be popular for her rebellious use of social commentary in a time when no others were doing so.
“We had a great turn out at our first meet up with over 15 people coming along and several others expressing an interest. It’s an exciting opportunity to share ideas and opinions with other Austen fans,” she says.
