It’s been just two months since the launch of the Auckland Council-backed dog safety education app, “A Dog’s Story”, and already nearly 16,000 people have had a play with it.

Helping kids stay safe around dogs
Geoff Keber, Manager, Auckland Council Animal Management, says this is a great result for a novel and fun approach to helping kids keep themselves safe around dogs.
“So many children we see are uncertain around dogs. This app is easy to use, offers clear lessons about how to approach dogs, and will undoubtedly contribute to a reduction in dog-related harm to children.“
The educational initiative supports other moves by the council to reduce dog-related harm.

- 3449 unique downloads to phones and tablets
- 15,966 total plays
- On average players spend 7 minutes, 32 seconds learning on the app (people are spending two times longer playing “A Dog’s Story” than the average time spent with educational apps and one-point-four times longer than mobile apps in general)
- 73 per cent of downloads have been in New Zealand and 27 per cent global
- There have been 42,099 total lessons completed (each step in the app is counted as a lesson) and 36 per cent of users have completed the final lesson.
