Schools in the Howick Local Board area will be putting their green thumbs to the test for the sake of good health as part of the board’s Fruit Trees in Schools initiative.
Now in its second year, a total of 24 schools from primary through to high schools have signed up to participate, up from 20 last year.
Part of the board’s Healthy Howick focus, the programme encourages youngsters to learn more about gardening and the importance of horticulture, but more importantly, encourages health and wellbeing.
In the future, the local board would like to see all local children having the chance to grow their own fruit trees or perhaps even an edible garden.
Once again, the board is thrilled to have the support from Kings Plant Barn in Howick, which is providing trees, fertiliser and going advice to participating schools.
