Glenmall is now more inviting and attractive for visitors to Glen Eden’s town centre, thanks to a refurbished courtyard outside the library.
In warmer months, activities can take place in the courtyard. These might include children’s story time and school holiday programmes.
The design of the courtyard tells some of the story of the area. The railway that transported caskets and mourners to Waikumete Cemetery is referenced through railway sleepers in the design, and coins set into the wooden sleepers represent the fare mourners would pay to travel to the area.
Another narrative speaks of the Waitākere Ranges, local farms and orchards. Native plantings reference the Waitākere ngahere (forest), the grassy mounds echo the foothills of the ranges, and apple trees represent the orchards.
Waitākere Ranges Local Board funded the works and approved the design.
More improvements still to come include a town square at the other end of Glenmall.
