Auckland Council’s inorganic service won a top accolade at the Waste Management Industry New Zealand (WasteMINZ) industry awards last night in Wellington (19 October).
The council won the best communication, engagement or education initiative category for its inorganic collection service.
“If we’re going to have a zero waste Auckland by 2040 we need to think innovatively about how we can get there.
“Working with community partners to minimise waste is key to success and we’re delighted that our new inorganics service has been recognised in this way,” said General Manager Waste Solutions Ian Stupple.
Introduced last year, this collection makes it possible for re-usable materials to be utilised by community groups. Thanks to the service a substantial amount of recovered material has benefitted over 80 community groups.
WasteMINZ Chief Executive Paul Evans says, “We applaud Auckland Council for this project. It clearly demonstrates the benefits of councils willing to take on risk and try something new through a collaborative approach in partnership with the private and community sectors.”
