Auckland’s population is growing rapidly. There are now more than 40,000 people living in the city centre.
Previously, it was predicted that Auckland’s central city population would only reach this level sometime after 2026.
In a typical week in Auckland there are:
- 825 new residents
- 472 jobs created
- 278 new dwellings required
- 52 additional students
More people travelling into the city
The morning peak in September 2016 was 1.3 per cent higher than the same period in 2015.
Fewer people driving into the city
In September 2015, 54 per cent of peak morning visitors were in a private car; over the past year this has fallen to 49 per cent.
Public transport more popular than ever
In September 2015, just under 40 per cent of visitors were on public transport. Over the past year, this has risen to 45 per cent.
