District Court Judge David Kirkpatrick has released the result of the judicial recount for the Waitematā Local Board to confirm Vernon Tava has retained his seat.

Mr Tava has retained his seat by ten votes, the same margin as the final result, to beat Jonathan Good for the final seat on the local board.

Mr Tava secured 5740 votes on the recount to Mr Good’s 5730. Each gained two additional votes.

Mr Good made the application for the judicial recount to confirm the final results. There is no further right of appeal.

Some 20,200 returned votes for the Waitemata Local Board were recounted and viewed in the presence of three scrutineers.

Electoral Officer Dale Ofsoske says “recounts are a normal part of the election process where results are very close. All voting documents are counted in the same manner as they were during the original count”.

Mr Tava was sworn in at last Thursday’s local board inauguration.
