The YMCA is celebrating 20 years of running the council-owned Mt Albert Community and Leisure Centre.
Manager Jill Gibson says it’s been a rewarding story of growth and development.
“We’ve seen huge growth over the last two decades, with memberships increasing from 275 to more than 1150, and an average 30,000 visits or participations every month,” she says.
Keen centre users
Many local groups have become keen centre users over the years, particularly after the Community Centre was added in 2002.
“Mt Albert Gymnasium Club, Mt Albert Badminton Club and Eddie Wong’s Martial Arts have been around since well before the YMCA took over and are still here.”
Events a big draw
Other events, such as family days and Halloween parties attended by more than 1000 people, have become regular occasions on the centre’s calendar.
Jill has been involved at the centre in one way or another since 1990 and says she loves the diversity of the role.
“I have become very passionate about having the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, and after all of these years I still love my job.
“YMCA is about enriching lives and you can’t get a better sense of purpose than that.”
Other highlights include winning the New Zealand Recreation Association’s national award for Outstanding Facility in 2004 and 2014.
Anniversary party
The centre will hold a 20th anniversary party on 10 December, 10am-2pm, at 773 New North Rd, Mount Albert.
