The December / January edition of OurAuckland magazine featured a photo of stand up paddlers on the cover. The paddlers were not following current safety rules and we apologise for any confusion caused by this image.

If you are paddling this summer, make sure you follow the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2014 by always wearing a lifejacket that complies with NZ Maritime Law, unless you are actively surfing breaking waves.

We also strongly recommend that stand up paddleboarders use a leg rope that is appropriate for the conditions – a quick-release waist leash in fast-flowing water, a straight leg rope in surf conditions and any type for other conditions.

You should also stay safe by:

  • checking the weather forecast before heading out on the water
  • taking special care with offshore winds, which can make it difficult to get back to shore
  • checking how the currents and tides will affect your location
  • paddling with a friend.

Gavin Houghton, President of NZ Stand Up Paddling Incorporated (NZSUP) says:

“We hope lots of Aucklanders get out on the water this summer and try stand up paddleboarding, and it’s important to do it safely and be smart about the water conditions.

Visit the NZSUP website for paddleboarding advice and tips for staying safe on the water this summer.”

You can find full details of the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2014 on the Harbourmaster website.
