The restored Fukuoka Friendship Garden is scheduled to open in autumn at its new location in Western Springs Lakeside Park.

It replaces the original friendship garden, which was given to Auckland in 1989 by Fukuoka City in Japan to recognise the sister cities’ close ties.

The re-establishment of the garden has been supported by Fukuoka City, which has sent delegates to help with the design and construction and to ensure the garden remains true to traditional Japanese design.

Albert-Eden-Roskill Ward Councillor Cathy Casey has been a strong advocate for the garden’s restoration.

“There has been a huge amount of generosity and collaboration on this project, which is helping to build even stronger ties between the city and people of Fukuoka and Auckland,” she says.
