Auckland Council is well served by the number of women on Auckland Council’s governing body and local boards, says Albert-Eden-Roskill Ward Councillor Cathy Casey.
“As we approach International Women’s Day on 8 March, it seems appropriate to reflect on the current status of women in local government in Auckland,” she says.
“Since Elizabeth Yates became Mayor of Onehunga Borough Council in 1893, women have continued to make progress in the leadership of Auckland Council."
“Seven of the 20 councillors are women (35 per cent). Of the 149 local board members, 71 are women (48 per cent). Four of the ten council committee chairs are women (40 per cent) and 12 local board chairs are women (57 per cent)."
“In the New Zealand Parliament, only 41 of the 121 MPs are women (34 per cent), so it is very pleasing to report positive progress for women in local government in Auckland.”
