An innovative Mt Roskill project is helping young Aucklanders get a great start in the construction industry.
Auckland Council, Fulton Hogan, Unitec, Puketāpapa Local Board and Youth Connections worked together to create a fantastic opportunity for young people by offering enrolment in a construction course for free, with the chance for employment on completion of their studies.
Six of the course graduates are now working full time on the Auaunga Awa project – a major Auckland Council project that will transform two Mt Roskill reserves to stop stormwater flooding and restore the area’s natural ecology.
One of the goals of the project was to provide employment and training to young people from the Puketāpapa area.
“We’re hoping this example will draw out more opportunities across Auckland, and get more young people securing good jobs,” says Puketāpapa Local Board member Shail Kaushal.
