Phillip Atuahiva and Brendon Collinson reckon there’s great job satisfaction in surveying houses.
The two friends met in October when they were hired to survey the social houses in Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure. Phillip and Brendon, who got their jobs through the Tāmaki Jobs and Skills Hub, say the experience has been invaluable.
Every day is different
On a typical day, Phillip and Brendon go to 10 or 12 social houses. They check the condition of each house and make sure things like the stove, shower head and smoke alarms are in working order.
Phillip says every day is different.
“I've always wanted to come into work and have it feel like I’m not working because I enjoy it so much. For me, that’s this job.”
Brendon agrees. “Everyone’s really nice and kind. At pretty much every house you walk into they offer you a cup of tea and a biscuit."
Creating opportunities
They have impressed their employer SPM Assets who hired them as part of its Tāmaki contribution, where companies that work with TRC give back to the community.
Project manager Kerrie Warwick has kept the workers on for another contract which runs until June. “I think this role would never have occurred to the guys as a career path but it can open up a lot of opportunities.”
