Auckland’s first Community Recycling Centre (CRC) is undergoing extensive renovations to renew the centre and expand the facilities.
Run by local social enterprise Waiuku Zero Waste and owned by Auckland Council, the Waiuku CRC aims to limit the amount of waste that goes to landfill by reusing, repurposing and recycling as much material as possible.
Auckland Council will invest $1 million to add a new building, asphaltic and concrete paving, pipework, a stormwater sand filter and a rain garden.
Waiuku Zero Waste manager Sue Wallis is looking forward to the revitalisation of the centre.
“It’s an exciting time for us and we are confident that the new improvements to the centre will help us increase capacity to better serve both the environment and the local community.”
Since opening in 2014, the CRC has achieved many notable results for the environment and has grown from one member of staff to 11 staff and multiple volunteers. In 2016, the team diverted more than 1000 tonnes of reusable waste from going to landfill.
Deputy Mayor and Franklin Ward Councillor Bill Cashmore says the site plays an important role within the Franklin community.
“Our entire region has strong ties to the land and the environment so preserving both is a priority. Waiuku Zero Waste has made a real difference in this space and I’m looking forward to seeing what the centre will accomplish in the future.”
Work on the site starts this week and is due to be completed between late June and early July.
