Plans are underway to restore streams in reserves at Browns Bay and Stanmore Bay.
At Sherwood Reserve, part of Taiaotea Creek will be opened up and a further 240m of concrete channel will be removed before the stream is restored.
Students from three local schools had input into the project’s final design.
Stream at D'Oyly Reserve
Once the restoration is complete at D’Oyly Reserve, there will be a 670m stream along with the existing underground stormwater pipe.
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Chairperson Julia Parfitt says the reserve’s use is very restricted in winter because of boggy conditions.
“People gave feedback on the different activities they wanted at the reserve and also that they liked having open space. Year-round use of the reserve will be possible after the restoration.”
The final design has an open classroom for local schools to use, natural pathways with stream crossing points, riparian planting and open spaces for dog walking.
Both restoration projects are funded by developers, as part of their requirement for developing other sites, and will take place over the next 24 months.
