Winter’s here and the weather is a little less reliable, but that doesn’t mean you can’t head outdoors with the picnic basket.
We’ve rounded up five spots around the region that will hold up to at least a shower or two if you’re caught out while you’re enjoying eating in the great outdoors. So rug up in coats and scarves, pack something delicious and pick your destination.
1. Auckland Domain, Parnell
This large central park is perfect for picnicking, and if you’re smart about it you’ll be able to find adequate cover in a shower, too. If you’re up near the museum there are obvious dry spots among the columns at the front of the building, but if you’re down in the park you might need to run for cover at the band rotunda or the stands by the sports fields. All three have a great view, so you can continue your picnic in pretty surrounds. Read more
2. Botanic Gardens, Manurewa
There’s always something in bloom at the gardens, even in winter. And with numerous covered areas around the facility, including two covered courtyards that can be used by the public if there isn’t a function taking place, you’re bound to find a snug spot to stay warm and dry in. Read more
3. Arataki Visitor Centre, Waitakere
The lush green forest of the Waitākere Ranges is beautiful to picnic in, but not particularly pleasant when it starts raining. Fortunately, the wide, covered decks at the Arataki Visitor Centre make an ideal place to park yourselves and your picnic basket while you wait for the rain to subside. Plus, if you get through eating before the weather clears, there’s loads to see and do inside the centre.
4. Cornwall Park, Epsom
With its barbecue facilities, wide open green spaces and pretty gardens, Cornwall Park is already a much-loved picnic destination. But near the café you’ll also find an enormous band rotunda, which has plenty of room to shelter you from the elements if need be. It also gives you a pretty great vantage point for taking in the lovely surroundings.
5. Long Bay Regional Park, Long Bay
This spectacular scenic spot boasts views across the water, and you won’t miss out if you are sitting in the covered picnic area either – it’s a delightful place to park up and enjoy a sheltered lunch. This spot is also available to book if you want to guarantee your spot for a larger gathering.
