Since 2015, Auckland Council has invested more than $3.4 million in sports parks and fields in Rodney.
The contributions have helped make all-year play possible at more sports fields in the area.
Rodney Councillor Greg Sayers says the council recognises the growing demand on sports fields, and how important it is to continue investing.
“Sport is a big part of our lives and many people play outdoor sports all year round,” he says.
“In the last five years, the council has provided an extra 28 hours per week of field time, which is the equivalent of another 230 junior players in Rodney.”
Brent Bailey, Rodney Local Board’s Parks and Recreation Committee Chair, says investing in sports fields is a priority for the local board.
“We are working with the council to make sure our fields can be used by different sports codes, will stay open for longer periods in winter and will meet the needs of training teams,” he says.
Sports field upgrades in Rodney
- Bourne Dean Reserve: new cricket practice nets are being installed later in 2017.
- Huapai Domain: fields 3a and 3b have new sand carpets. Work planned for field 4 includes irrigation, drainage and floodlights and for the training area new sand fields and floodlights. All this work is expected to be completed by April 2018.
- Riverhead War Memorial Park: fields 2 and 3 will have new sand carpets to be completed by January. Further upgrades are planned for the training area and field 1 with all this work expected to be completed by April 2018.
- Warkworth Showgrounds: new LED floodlights have been installed on fields 1 and 2.
- Wellsford Centennial Park: fields 1 and 2 will have new drainage and irrigation which will be completed by February 2018.
- Whangateau Domain Reserve: field 3 has new floodlights.
