This link will improve cycling in Orakei
Ōrākei Local Board has decided to advocate strongly for a cycling and pedestrian link to run from the area around Gowing Drive to the Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive Shared Path.

Ōrākei Local Board has decided to advocate strongly for a cycling and pedestrian link to run from the area around Gowing Drive to the Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive Shared Path.

The link will provide a safe and direct connection across the shared path from Gowing Drive to Kohimarama.

“Ōrākei already has an extensive network of parks, reserves, beaches and coastal walkways,” says local board chair Colin Davis.

“Our aim is to develop a network of safe and easy-to-use cycling and walking connections between our neighbourhoods, schools, parks, and reserves. These not only add a great recreational option for people but on a more practical level create another commuting opportunity, increasing safety through our streets."

“Providing separate spaces for cars, pedestrians and cyclists also reduces congestion in key areas around schools and busy intersections.”

The board has agreed to allocate up to $2 million in the 2017/2018 budget to create the link if Auckland Council’s governing body, Auckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency work with the board to provide the remaining funding.

The board presented the case for this initiative to the governing body during recent Annual Budget negotiations and is advocating for funding in the 2018-2028 Longterm Plan.

The Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive Shared Path and the Gowing Drive connection have had strong support in feedback during the Annual Budget consultation.
