Construction of Auckland Transport’s Northcote Safe Cycle Route is now underway.
The 5.2km path runs from the intersection of Taharoto and Northcote roads in Takapuna to the ferry terminal at Northcote Point. It will have on-road and off-road sections suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.
It will be built in five sections, each designed to the requirements of its location.

The first stage of construction, between Bartley Street in Northcote Point and the Northcote Point ferry terminal, is underway, and is expected to be complete in July.
Work on the remaining sections will start soon, and the project is due to be finished in mid-2018.
Councillors welcome investment
North Shore Ward Councillor Richard Hills welcomes Auckland Transport’s increased investment in walking and cycling infrastructure.
“This route will be invaluable, not only for trips between Takapuna and Northcote, but for trips to and from Northcote Town Centre, local schools and the Onewa Domain sports grounds and netball centre,” he says.
“People tell me they’ll get out of their cars if the options are safe, especially when it comes to our children and older residents.”
Local board plans to increase walking and cycling spend
Kaipātiki Local Board Chair Danielle Grant agrees and says the board intends to spend more of its transport budget on walking and cycling infrastructure to deliver on its connections plan.
“The Kaipātiki Connections Network Plan will improve and extend walking and cycling links between our schools, town centres, reserves and coastline,” she says.
“As our population grows and intensifies around our town centres and villages, it’s vital we have this infrastructure in place.”
The Northcote Safe Cycle Route is the outcome of a collaborative consultation process started in 2014.
