Takapuna's Hurstmere Road set for major upgrade
The proposed streetscape upgrade of Hurstmere Road in Takapuna will include more public seating, better street lighting and more vibrant streetscaping.

The upgrade will be carried out on the section of Hurstmere Road between Lake Road and Anzac Street, and aims to reduce vehicle dominance and increase walking and cycling facilities.

Other features include more public seating, better street lighting, more vibrant streetscaping and a new stormwater treatment system to remove pollutants from the water discharging to the beach.

Traffic changes and cycling upgrades

This section of Hurstmere Road would become one way for north-bound traffic with a 30km/h speed limit, with south-bound traffic redirected along Anzac Street and Lake Road.

A south-bound cycle lane will also be introduced, made with a different surfacing material to maintain clear separation from the general traffic lane.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chairman Grant Gillon says, "This consultation is an important and exciting opportunity for the people of Takapuna to help shape the future look and function of their town centre."

“The proposal is certainly striking and it provides great environmental benefits for our beach which people will support. It’s encouraging to see Auckland Transport working with various arms of council to come up with innovative and sustainable options for improving Takapuna."

"I urge people to go online and look at what is being proposed, or to go speak in person to the project team at one of the two upcoming community sessions."
