Henderson-Massey residents are set to benefit from a $4.5 million investment in safer, more sustainable transport, after Henderson-Massey Local Board approved funding for three major projects across the local transport network.
The investment will deliver a new signalised pedestrian crossing at one of the area’s busiest intersections, upgrades to the northern section of the Henderson Creek Shared Path, and new lighting along a key cycling and walking route through Cranwell Park.
Henderson-Massey Local Board chair Chris Carter says the investment reflects the board’s commitment to creating safer connections for local communities.
“Making Henderson-Massey a great place to live and work starts with ensuring people can move around safely,” says Carter.
“These projects will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, encourage more people to choose active transport, and help create a more connected community.”
Funded projects
The board allocated $4,455,679 to the following projects:
- Universal Drive / Swanson Road / Don Buck Road pedestrian crossing improvements – $1,958,679
New signalised at-grade pedestrian crossings on all four approaches to the Universal Drive / Swanson Road / Don Buck Road roundabout.
The upgrade responds to residents’ concerns that turning vehicles often fail to see or stop for pedestrians until after completing the turn. Peak-hour signal metering will also improve intersection operation.
- Northern Henderson Creek Shared Path upgrade– $2,037,000
Upgrades to the northern end of the 7.75 km shared path linking the SH16 path with Henderson Valley Road.
Works include path widening and realignment where needed, plus new amenity lighting along this important commuter route connecting several suburbs.
- Section 1 - SH16 shared path to Flanshaw Road entrance - $237,000.00
- Section 2 - Flanshaw Street to Quiet Street - $1,150,000.00
- Section 3 - Quiet Street to Central Park Drive - $650,000.00
- Cranwell Park – Cranwell Esplanade lighting – $460,000
New amenity lighting will be installed along a remaining 460-metre section of the shared path at Cranwell Park and Cranwell Esplanade.
The route forms part of an important cycling and walking connection, and the additional lighting will improve visibility and safety for users travelling through the area during the evenings and early mornings.
Future priorities
Alongside the approved projects, the board has also identified priority projects should additional funding become available.
The first priority would be ensuring existing projects receive any extra funding required to complete delivery. Any remaining funding would then be directed towards:
- Don Buck Road pop-Up protection – $990,000
- Old Te Atatū Road bus stop upgrade – $70,000
- Te Atatū Road bus stop upgrade – $70,000
- Swanson Road bus stop upgrade – $70,000
- Great North Road / McLeod Road intersection improvements – $1,200,000
- Sturges Road pedestrian improvements – $230,000.
