Henderson-Massey residents are expected to benefit from a $4.5 million investment in safer, more sustainable transport, after Henderson-Massey Local Board approved funding for three priority projects across the local transport network.
The funding enables Auckland Transport to progress investigation, design and staged delivery of pedestrian crossing improvements at one of the area’s busiest intersections, upgrades to the northern section of the Henderson Creek Shared Path, and new lighting along a key cycling and walking route through Cranwell Park.
Henderson-Massey Local Board chair Chris Carter says the investment reflects the board’s commitment to improving safety and connectivity in transport options for local communities.
“Making Henderson-Massey a great place to live and work starts with ensuring people can move around safely,” says Carter.
“These projects will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, encourage more people to choose active transport, and help create a more connected community.”
Funded projects
The board allocated $4,455,679 to the following projects, subject to further development and delivery processes:
- Universal Drive / Swanson Road / Don Buck Road pedestrian crossing improvements – $1,958,679
This project will be further developed in response to concerns that turning vehicles may not consistently identify or give way to pedestrians.
- Northern Henderson Creek Shared Path upgrade– $2,037,000
The funding supports the progression of upgrades to the northern end of the 7.75 km shared path linking the SH16 path with Henderson Valley Road.
Works may include path widening and realignment where feasible, and consideration of additional lighting along this route.
-
- Section 1 - SH16 shared path to Flanshaw Road entrance - $237,000.00
- Section 2 - Flanshaw Street to Quiet Street - $1,150,000.00
- Section 3 - Quiet Street to Central Park Drive - $650,000.00
- Cranwell Park – Cranwell Esplanade lighting – $460,000
This project will consider the installation of additional amenity lighting along a remaining section of the shared path, to improve visibility and support safer use in low-light conditions.
Future priorities
Alongside the approved projects, the board has also identified priority projects should additional funding become available.
Priority will first be given to addressing any funding required to progress current projects through to delivery. Any remaining funding may then be directed towards the following projects:
- Don Buck Road pop-Up protection – $990,000
- Old Te Atatū Road bus stop upgrade – $70,000
- Te Atatū Road bus stop upgrade – $70,000
- Swanson Road bus stop upgrade – $70,000
- Great North Road / McLeod Road intersection improvements – $1,200,000
- Sturges Road pedestrian improvements – $230,000.
