Titirangi Library is going to be closed for longer than originally anticipated, and Auckland Council is reminding locals that library services are still available in the surrounding areas.
The library is currently closed for construction work, which includes removing debris from the ceiling cavity, refurbishing the ceiling grid and panels, installing new LED lighting, repairing an internal leak and repainting the library’s walls.
Unknown defects cause delay
While it was initially expected the library would reopen in late September, previously unknown structural defects were discovered while this work was being undertaken.
“Our contractor found significant rust in the roof at the library, and has also seen that the roofing building paper has a gap in it that could be causing wind-blown rain to be entering,” says the council’s Head of Project Delivery John Schermbrucker.
November reopening expected
“As a result, additional remedial work will be needed, which will add another four to six weeks to the project," John says.
“At this stage, we expect the repairs to be completed around mid-November, at which point the library will be able to reopen.”
Other libraries available
Michelle Englehardt, Manager Community Library – Waitākere Ranges, says Auckland Libraries wants to remind customers of the alternatives that are available while the library is closed.
“We’re encouraging our customers to use the Glen Eden and New Lynn libraries, where they’ll see some familiar faces, as our staff are working across these locations.
School holiday plans
“We’re aware that many families use the library over the school holidays, and this delay means that Titirangi Library will unfortunately be closed over this period. However, the programmes we offer will be available at the other nearby libraries," Michelle says.
“The Titirangi Library and Glen Eden Library children’s teams are working together to run a series of exciting free activities throughout the October school holidays at Glen Eden Library. We’ll post these on the Auckland Libraries website, as well as the Glen Eden and Titirangi libraries’ Facebook pages.
“While this delay may be disappointing for locals, we’re excited for the refreshed library that will continue to be an important part of the community.”
