As the region swelters in record temperatures, dog owners are being reminded to prevent burnt paws.
“We’d encourage owners – and professional dog walkers – to avoid walking on hot surfaces during the heat of the day as asphalt, concrete and sand can become extremely hot,” says Nikki Marchant-Ludlow, Manager Animal Management.
An air temperature of 25 degrees can result in an asphalt temperature of over 50 degrees, causing painful burns and damage to dogs' feet.
How to tell if the ground is too hot for your dog's feet:
“Put the back of your hand against the surface and if you can’t keep it there for five seconds it’s too hot for your dog,” says Nikki.
