Over summer I travelled around Auckland – from Ōrewa in the north to Awhitū Peninsula in the south.
People were out enjoying themselves at our beaches and regional parks. We’re lucky to live in such a beautiful environment.
However, beach pollution and the king tide and storm surge in January are a reminder of the challenges we need to confront, particularly with the increasing effects of climate change. For too long, stormwater flooding into our wastewater system has polluted our streams and beaches.

Creating a more sustainable Auckland is also a focus of next month’s consultation. Our draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan proposes to reduce household waste to landfill by 30 per cent by 2021, working towards a goal of being zero waste by 2040.
This is something the council can’t do alone – we all need to take responsibility.
