'What is Art?' is a local youth-led project designed to engage and inform communities about public artworks in the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki area.
Posing the question 'what is art?', the project aims to spark a conversation within the community about art's place in the area.
Local digital media startup NO SIX filmed a collection of public responses to artwork in the Glen Innes, Onehunga and Panmure communities as part of a larger social media campaign to find out what art means to different people.
A short film was created from the interviews and was used to open the area's Auckland Art Week Festival.
One of the events on offer at the festival was the Public Art Bike Trail and Tour which visited 19 public art pieces that are located within a 4km radius.
Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board member Maria Meredith was at the art festival opening.
“It's impressive to see the amount and the variety of public art we have in Maungakiekie-Tāmaki, there certainly is plenty for us to celebrate," she said.
“The theme 'What is Art?' definitely opened up conversations about how differently art is viewed, which proves the value in supporting such a diversity of local artisans.”
