Onehunga Wharf is now officially under the ownership of Auckland Council’s development agency, Panuku Development Auckland, after it was purchased from Ports of Auckland earlier this year.
“Onehunga was one of the first areas established by Māori and European settlers, due to its lush environment and natural harbours,” says Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Councillor Josephine Bartley.
“And, over the next 25 years, as the revitalisation of the area takes place, we will see Onehunga become even more vibrant, culturally unique and economically sound.”
Councillor Bartley describes securing the wharf as a key win for Onehunga.
“The wharf plays a crucial role in connecting our community to the Manukau Harbour. It’s great to see it secured as an area that could eventually be opened up to the people of Onehunga as a flourishing and lively centre that is well connected to its past, its community and the surrounding environment.
“The port has a strong and important history for the people of Onehunga. This purchase means that we can make sure that the community enjoys it and benefits from it for years to come.”
“I am looking forward to working with the local board on progressing plans for the Onehunga Port and Township redevelopment,” says Councillor Bartley.
There is still a lot of behind-the-scenes work to do before public events or development of the wharf can begin. The wharf has health and safety issues and some maintenance and upgrades are needed.
Panuku will work with stakeholders to see this multi-million dollar project happen in stages.
