With summer just around the corner, now's a great time to give cycling a go if you’ve never tried it. It’s good for your health, good for the environment and good for saving you money too.
Under its action plan 'Becoming a Low Carbon Community – An Action Plan' released earlier this year, Puketāpapa Local Board aims to support locals to reduce their carbon footprint from 6.7 tonnes to 3 tonnes per person per year by 2040.
Under the plan, the local board is encouraging people to take up cycling in the coming months. Using alternative methods of transport, like cycling, is one of the seven key changes people can make in to reduce their carbon footprint outlined by the Puketāpapa Local Low Carbon Network initiative.
The Puketāpapa Local Low Carbon Network has created a map of the area to encourage more people onto their bikes to enjoy the wonderful maunga, eateries, picnic sites and markets in the local area.
“By biking safely people can rely less on cars, shop locally and discover wonderful activities close to home,” says Harry Doig, Chair, Puketāpapa Local Board.
"All these things go towards reducing their carbon footprint, consuming less and saving money. It’s definitely worth giving a go.”
More actions that align with regional plans to reduce carbon emissions can found at Live Lightly, supporting Aucklanders to make choices that make a difference.
Pedal Puketāpapa
The Pedal Puketāpapa project is a collaboration of the passionate locals at the Bike Kitchen, Global Lighthouse and Roskill Youth Zone and Ecomatters Bike Hub, and is supported by the Wesley Markets and Puketāpapa Local Board.
The cycling initiative, encouraging people throughout the area to get on their bikes, will be launched at an event later this week. Bike Kitchen will provide tips and one-on-one help with bike repairs and bike skills training.
