Two key projects in Birkenhead Town Centre are making steady progress – the main street upgrade at Highbury Corner and permanent stabilisation works at the Rawene Road carpark.
Main Street upgrade project
The main street upgrade project has progressed steadily since April and remains on track for completion by December. Recently completed aspects include the installation of underground drainage, new kerb alignments, a new pedestrian crossing on Mokoia Road and new stone wall beneath the Norfolk Pine tree.
Work is currently focussed on pouring concrete into the footpath paving bases and installing pavers over the top, as well as reinstating the road surface around the new kerb and channels.
Construction of the lower and upper timber decks under the pine tree continues, with a new glass balustrade and furniture expected to be installed in late November. The final stage of works taking place in November will include streetscape planting and reinstatement of a new traffic island.
Rawene Carpark works
Work to deliver the first phase of the Rawene Road carpark is nearly complete. An access ramp has now been built to provide construction access from what remains of the existing car park to the main works and will also be used for access to the new car park to be built in 'phase two'.
The gully slope is currently being trimmed and will be filled with crushed rock from the bottom up. Construction of the new carpark, in addition to the repair of the old slope, will get underway in October and is expected to be completed and ready for use by May 2019.
Local Board Chair John Gillon says, “When these projects are complete, it will create a more enjoyable experience for visitors to the town centre.”
“We’d like to thank everyone for their continued patience during these works and confirm that pedestrian access has and will remain open to all retail and businesses during construction.”
