Have you ever wanted to stroll the streets of yesterday, wander the corridors of the past, or gaze at the world through the eyes of our ancestors?
Well, now’s your chance.
Step back into the past with an augmented reality app exploring Uptown Auckland – the first of its kind to be tried in our city.
Guided by the knowledgeable and ever-excited DJ Hannah, the audio tour follows nine different sites of interest including Orange Hall, the Mt Eden Prison and St David's Church, with each site offering its own augmented reality experience.
Launched as part of Auckland Heritage Festival and developed by the Uptown Business Association, the experience is simple to try out.
Just download the AR-FM app to your phone and you’re set for a unique journey through the stories of Auckland's historic places and people.
Take a peek at the dancers of yesteryear through the windows of Orange Hall, flick through wanted posters of the famed George Wilder who escaped Mt Eden Prison, and experience the incredible quatrefoil artwork which was worn proudly by St David's Church in 2015.
You can see a preview here first or download the tour app from uptown.co.nz/ar-fm using a smartphone.
Gary Holmes, general manager of the Uptown Business Association, is excited about developing the app and the potential for discovering heritage in different ways.
“It’s such a fresh, unique experience and a chance to discover our local history in a fun and engaging form.
"Auckland Heritage Festival has been a great platform to launch it and reach out to Aucklanders who are passionate about our city’s stories and past.”
