Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters team will start carrying out water and sediment tests in Western Springs Lake this month.
Testing is expected to continue into early 2019, with the exact dates depending on the weather.
A remote-control boat will be used to survey sediment at the bottom of the lake, and team members will crew a boat to carry out tests once a month from November until April, with the results used to inform decisions about improving water quality.
Earlier this year, Waitematā Local Board released a draft park development plan for Western Springs Te Wai Ōrea Lakeside Park.
Board parks portfolio lead Shale Chambers says residents made it clear that action was needed to tackle the lake’s poor water quality.
"Our vision for the park certainly includes improved water quality in the lake and streams, so the focus is on improving the existing state of a well-loved park without making major changes.
"As guardians of the area’s parks, we want to ensure we maximise the benefits our parks and green spaces provide."
The board oversees more than 80 parks and reserves in the Waitematā area. It also has a co-governance arrangement with the Governing Body for Auckland Domain Pukekawa.
