Auckland Transport (AT) is seeking contractors for a major upgrade of one of Auckland's most iconic streets.
AT has released a Request for Tender (RFT) for the long-awaited Karangahape Road Enhancements Project. The aim is to begin work in the first quarter of 2019.
Karangahape Road is a joint project between Auckland Transport and Auckland Council and aims to preserve the road's unique character and recognise the history of the area, while creating a street environment that supports the local community and businesses.
"We appreciate the collaboration between AT and the council and their commitment to working closely with the local community, mana whenua, business owners and the Karangahape Business Association (KBA) on the new streetscape enhancements," says Pippa Coom, Waitemata Local Board Chair.
"Going out to tender is a significant milestone and we're all looking forward to seeing this project finally come to life."
An enhanced Karangahape Road will provide a safe and appealing environment for pedestrians, a design narrative about the Māori history of the Karangahape ridge, more space for outdoor dining and street activities, safe and attractive routes for people on bikes, improved transport choices including bus efficiency and reliability, and a greener, more attractive environment.
Further information will be made available once the contract is awarded.
