Riding for children with disabilities at Meadowbank Pony Club’s brand new training arena will be greatly assisted by a $10,000 grant from Ōrākei Local Board.
The arena opened in early October, and the board grant has helped to fund a new watering system for the arena.
“The new watering system will suppress dust in the arena, which is particularly important for riders with disabilities who sometimes struggle to cope with wearing goggles,” says board chair Kit Parkinson.
“We’re so fortunate to have this inner-city riding club in our area, and we’re pleased to have been able to support them in this way.”
Meadowbank Pony Club is a non-profit that has been operating since 1965, grazing 25 – 45 horses per year with a membership of around 40 families.
Together, parents and children voluntarily run the club participating in monthly working bees carrying out tasks like repairing fences, trimming trees, clearing gorse and painting jumps.
As with most non-profits staffed by volunteers, receiving grants and fundraising are essential in keeping the pony club open.
Ōrākei Local Board supports the Ōrākei community with local grant funding for projects that fall into a number of wide-ranging categories including arts, community, environment, heritage and sports and recreation.
