The five talented recipients of Studio One Toi Tū’s 2018/19 Creative Studio Residency are from diverse artistic disciplines and include an illustrator, a filmmaker, a theatre-maker and a digital design duo.
The residency is supported by Auckland Council to develop artists and facilitate their work on outstanding, courageous projects at Studio One Toi Tū.
During the residency, New Zealand based actor and theatre-maker, Katie Burson, will work with a wide range of artists to devise theatrical content. This will lead to the creation of an original production and the development of existing work.
Da-Ku Set will explore the notion of ‘Nostalgia’ as a tool to combat feelings of the present and to generate positive outlooks for the future. They will combine their digital design skills to push their imagination beyond print and engage in future technologies that give them new possibilities to be experimental in their work.
Art and craft tutor and illustrator Sophie Watson will work towards completing two illustrated book projects for her residency project; a fun children's book which uses rhyme, wordplay and humour to introduce younger readers to interesting and sometimes difficult words, and a personal story with universal themes of unearthing things, which are buried in both a literal and figurative sense.
Teresa Peters has a diverse background as a filmmaker, art director and fine artist, and has exhibited internationally in her fields. During the Creative Studio Residency, Peters will continue her practice in raw clay and ceramics and investigate ecological issues through the Anthropocene – the geological age where human activity took dominant effect on the environment.

This year’s five Creative Studio Residency recipients have received the opportunity to base themselves in dedicated studio spaces for up to 11 months in Ponsonby. To help them to achieve their project goals, they will also have the time and opportunities to test and workshop ideas with peers and professionals throughout the residency period.
At the end of the tenure, residents will exhibit the outcome of their project, either as an event or in the Studio One Toi Tū galleries.
Studio One Toi Tū is an Auckland Council arts facility in the Waitematā Local Board area that brings the local community together to develop creative relationships, ideas and practice in a vibrant inner-city exhibition and learning hub.
