Auckland Council, through its CCO Panuku, is working with central Government on a comprehensive redevelopment plan that will improve Northcote’s town centre, better connect the town centre with local homes, and deliver better housing in the area.
As part of that plan, Housing New Zealand Corporation (HNZ) is redeveloping the area around Cadness Loop Reserve in Northcote.
To support this, Auckland Council is proposing to exchange 525 square metres of Cadness Loop Reserve with 525 square metres of land at 68-74 and 76-82 Cadness Street, Northcote.
The exchange would reconfigure Cadness Loop Reserve, along with land acquisition and road stopping. More on road stopping can be read about on the Auckland Transport website.
The proposed land exchange will enable the following:
- increasing the size of the reserve from approximately 1756 square metres to 3215 square metres
- improved safety in the reserve
- providing a wider range of recreation opportunities for the surrounding community.
Kaipātiki Local Board Chair John Gillon says the local board supports the land exchange proposal as it will enable significant improvements in the area.
“The proposed land exchange will enable us to enlarge and reconfigure Cadness Loop Reserve, providing a better park and improved connection into the future Northcote Greenway, and beyond into the surrounding schools and town centre,” says Gillon.
The Northcote Greenway was formally endorced by Kaipātiki Local Board last month, and is proposed to run alongside Northcote Intermediate, Onepoto Primary and the new housing developments on Cadness Street.
“The reorientation of Cadness Loop Reserve will also allow better integration with the adjacent housing developments, including reducing shading from buildings and provide better passive surveillance for enhanced community safety.”
“If the proposal goes ahead, the local board will then also consider a new name for the reserve, to reflect that the new configuration is no longer the centre of a road loop," says Gillon.
“Before council approves the land exchange, we would like community feedback to help understand all the consequences the exchange could have on people living in the surrounding area.”
