Auckland Transport is working with Hibiscus and Bays Local Board to change roads in Torbay and Mairangi Bay town centres.
AT wants to make it safer to get around and will start by making sure the roads are safe for everyone, especially children and the elderly.
The improvements include installing new raised pedestrian crossings and building out kerbs upon entry to the town centres to help encourage slower vehicle speeds.
The changes pave the way for plans to introduce a safe speed limit of 30km/h in the town centres, which AT will be consulting on next year.
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board Chair Julia Parfitt says these changes will be beneficial to the community.
"There are many people walking in these areas and we know these improvements will help ensure the town centres are prioritising the safety of people."
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board is funding these improvements and support plans to encourage safer speeds.
Statistics show 80 per cent of all road deaths and serious injuries occur on 50km/h local urban roads. Nearly half of those deaths and injuries involve vulnerable road users – children, the elderly, people walking and people on bikes or motorcycles.
No matter what causes a crash, speed is the undeniable factor in whether an accident is likely to occur. AT is committed to making a more forgiving road network, where human error or distraction behind the wheel does not automatically lead to devastating trauma on our roads.
The improvements are planned to be implemented in 2019.
