The O’Jays had it right, you got to give the people what they want. And that’s exactly what Central City Library is doing with the Desert Island Bookcase.
While the current Librarians’ Choice shelf showcases an outstanding response to great literature, they are always on the lookout for more feedback on what the public wants next.
If you found yourself stranded on a desert island, sand between your toes, trees so tall they look as if they brush the clouds above, the sun beating down and a washed up volleyball your only company; which book would you want to have with you?
Sure, there’s a multitude of classics, old favourites, the reads that stay on your nightstand, but what if you had no bedside table on which to stack your precious nightly reads?
Would you choose a historical novel to escape into the past? A distinctive classic that prompts your thoughts to wander? Maybe even a dystopian sci-fi to thrust you into outer space?
As it turns out, when customers were asked the question, the answer was overwhelmingly: everything. The results varied massively – from Homer’s Odyssey to Satrapi’s graphic novel, Persepolis; from religious texts to cooking books, from Harry Potter to The Secret Garden.
Welcome to Central City Library’s Desert Island Bookcase!
