The Remuera West Scout Group is on its way to solar-powered lighting and heating thanks to funding from Ōrākei Local Board.
Folding solar panels and recyclable, reusable and non-hazardous crystal batteries will now keep the scouts warm and well-lit in an environmentally-friendly manner.
The equipment will be put to use during regular outdoor camps and at the 2019 Jamboree - the largest scout camp held in New Zealand, attended by around 4000 people.
Scout leader Kevin Hames says the solar panels and batteries are vital pieces of equipment to support the development of his scout’s youth leadership and adventure skills.
“Environmentally-friendly equipment was chosen to reflect Scouts New Zealand values of environmental protection, the reduction of waste and re-use and recycling within all of our activities,” he says.
Ōrākei Local Board Community portfolio lead David Wong says the board was pleased to support the Remuera West Scouts in a project that aligns with both the community and environmental values of the Board.
“We love to see youth thriving, taking on leadership roles and championing the vital need for environmental protection. Our young people are leading the way to a better future and it’s important we support them to do that,” he says.
