Healthy Puketāpapa Community Kai is an initiative funded by the Puketāpapa Local Board. Using live and recorded cooking demonstrations, it shows how to create quick and healthy meals from locally produced fresh and affordable ingredients from the Wesley Market.
“This project is an opportunity to improve people’s well-being and encourage a healthy lifestyle. It also showcases a range of businesses and the variety of affordable produce that is available locally,” says Puketāpapa Local Board Chair Harry Doig.
“This project is fully funded by the board as it aligns with the board’s outcome of improved well-being. We also like how the project is helping local communities develop their creative skills.”
Puketāpapa local Wick Nixon from Wicked Wellbeing and the WISE Collective, a group of former refugee women working with Auckland Regional Migrant Services, give live demonstrations of recipes. They’re filmed by a local crew, The Plug who are also currently running the RYZ FM radio station at the Wesley Community Centre.
The 10 cooking demonstration videos are produced by the Wesley Creative Lab and are available on Puketāpapa Local Board’s facebook page. The project has partnered with New Zealand food blogger Rad/ish and Two One One Two Creatives who provide media training to the WISE Collective.
The Wesley Market began in 1994 and is Auckland’s largest mid-week farmer’s market. It includes a variety of stalls and runs every Tuesday and Friday throughout the year, except for public holidays.
