With school starting up again, over 12,700 children across Auckland are heading back to the classroom after a summer of reading adventures.
Auckland Libraries Kia Māia te Whai Dare to Explore summer reading programme grew by 13% since last year, with children from all over Auckland jumping at the challenge.
The programme ran between 9 December 2017 and 17 January 2018, with six weeks of activities designed to encourage 5-13 year olds to maintain and increase their love of books and reading.
For one kid in particular, Dare to Explore helped fuel his passion for reading after a wonderful wordy achievement in 2017.
Daniel Revans, aged 9, won the ICAS medal for top Year 4 Speller in New Zealand last December and found that the libraries’ resources and programmes kept up his bookish appetite during the holidays.
Daniel’s mother, Sam, credits his spelling achievement to his love of books, which has been encouraged by Auckland Libraries’ range of activities and services, including the summer reading programmes.
“The library has really fostered his love of reading and we appreciate the wealth of learning and resources our local libraries offer for free,” says Sam.
Daniel has participated in Kia Maia te Whai Dare to Explore several times over the years and regularly borrows up to 35 books from his local Howick Library at a time.
