Tree privet is a fast-growing shrub identifiable by its dark green, glossy, oval leaves.
It has long, creamy-yellow flowers that turn into dark purple berries. If it’s not controlled, tree privet can take over and completely dominate native bush, and prevent native tree species from growing.
Its leaves and berries are poisonous and the scent of the flowers is thought to contribute to asthma.
Auckland Council controls tree privet in regional parks and in parks with high-value ecosystems.
To control tree privet on your property:
- pull or dig up seedlings
- cut smaller trees down and paint the stumps with herbicide
- drill holes in the trunk of mature trees and fill them with herbicide
- spray the leaves in spring and autumn.
